THE STATE VS. YOUR STATE
(ON FEELING OUR ART AS AN AUTONOMOUS SOURCE OF SOCIAL, POLITICAL, & ECONOMIC POWER WITH AN INNATE SEDUCTIVE FORCE)
Between 1666 & 1676, the female mystical Protestant poet & theologian Katharina von Greiffenberg visited the Catholic Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire no fewer than 6 times.
Each time, her intent was to personally persuade him to convert to her faith.
His explicitly anti-Protestant policies & devout Catholicism did not deter her.
The history of the brutal & bloody Thirty Years’ War between Catholics and Protestants, which had just ended in 1648, did not deter her.
When after the 6th visit she had not yet convinced him, she concluded, undaunted, that God had a different plan for her & for the Emperor.
In 2026 we may still very much have Empire, but it is not always clear which emperor we would visit or to what end.
As Ted Lasso puts it when asked if it's ok to pray for his football team,
"YEAH, OF COURSE. BUT TO WHICH GOD AND IN WHAT LANGUAGE, YOU KNOW?"

Yet in the Lyceum, we do our best to set them aside,
& simply make ourselves available to move & be moved in service of collective emergence.
And we do so regardless of the short-term success or failure of any of our attempts.
It is in this spirit that we undertake our shared project of the Emergent Summits.

Quarterly Conference-Festivals Combining Experimental Teaching, Community-Building, and Individual & Collective TransformationÂ
In the Lyceum, instead of bringing our complaints to an emperor, we resolve to become the sovereign we are seeking -- and to entwine our thought & our action with those of other sovereigns around us.
To this end, we hold 4 quarterly Emergent Summits.
"Summit": from Latin summum - "highest" or "greatest"
"the topmost part of anything, like the crown of the head or the peak of a mountain"

Emergence: from the French Ă©merger, "to rise up from below"
In our Emergent Summits, we do not shout our expertise from the rooftops, we open ourselves to a collective reflection that produces new thoughts none of us could have had on our own.Â
The Emergent Summits are not shortcuts for gaining followers or clients.
They are rather manifestations of our collective creative power, no matter who arrives “from the outside.”
They are, first and foremost, for us.
Just as the Lyceum is.
They are spaces where we bring our body of work into the world in real time.
Because our work exists & matters irrespective of external recognition.
And when we live by this, that is precisely when our power in the external world...really begins to grow.

There are countless spaces in the online business world where you can learn tips and tricks for making money on the internet.
What I am inviting you into, in the Lyceum in general and the Council in particular, is something different.
I am inviting you to co-create a collective nervous system & emergent economy with me, my colleagues, & my friends.
Have you heard the phrase “safety in numbers”?
This is true in a literal as well as a figurative sense.
The reason people flock to already-existing institutions & accounts with huge followings is that a certain kind of safety is available there.
Yet so often we purchase safety at the price of others parts of our humanity.
What makes us unique. What makes us different.
The divergent ways we think, feel, act, desire.
The Lyceum is a collective space for individuals in the true sense.
I can feel safe in no other collective — and neither can you.
For those most connected to emergence, it can be easy to feel isolated, and even to feel that it is not worth it to be connected to others, let alone a whole community.
Too often we have found ourselves having to suppress parts of ourselves, & our sovereignty, in order to stay…
And we’ve chosen to leave instead.
Many of us are deeply gifted, even we ourselves can sense this, and yet we struggle to make money or build lasting work.
We wonder if it is because the algorithm, the mainstream, the world at large is against us.
Against our individuality & our sovereignty.
In a certain sense, in many different senses, it is.
Our individuality & our sovereignty is a threat to the way the world has been run for ages.
Â
But in another sense, a truer sense, we ourselves are the whole world.
Each us contains the entire universe within us, in embryonic form.
Each of us bears the power to transform the whole world, within & without.
This is what we are doing, individually & collectively, in the Lyceum.
Â
The Lyceum is not just about “business.”
Because part of the reason business doesn’t feel quite motivating to you is because it has been separated from art, meaning, justice, politics — the transformation & reclamation of the whole(ness of the) world.
In building the Lyceum, TOGETHER, we re-orient your sense of the world in which your business exists.
Suddenly the business you actually want to build — makes sense.
You are no longer surrounded by a market & a society with apparently no use at all for what you have to offer.
Instead, you are surrounded by magical people whose value you recognize & for whom your value is as obvious as can be.
And suddenly because of this precious necessary nutrient of mutual regard & recognition, expanding your work feels not only safe but even natural, fun, even kind of easy.
Which is not to say that it is without its mishaps, shame, pain, etc. But these pale in comparison to the obvious growth, progress, satisfaction, and pelasure you experience along the way.

The Lyceum is an exercise & an experiment in collective world-building in and through the individual expansion, experimentation, & creation of its members.
It is a space where we all grow the space by creating it together.
The Lyceum only exists in the process of its creation...
And I’m calling on you to co-create it with me.
