Dear Artist:

You've been lied to.

You've been told that building a life & a living around your art means you have to:

chase fans,

please critics,

achieve technical mastery,

win the support of institutions.

That if you can't do that

or you don't want to

then you're not cut out to be an artist.

But you're here because you know:

THE ARTIST UNDER CAPITALISM HAS A FAR MORE IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY THAN THAT.

This is why the artist has such an intimate relationship with shame:

Because all transformation happens through transmuting the shame that holds change and possibility at bay.

Artists are devoted to this process.

We facilitate it in ourselves and others.

This is why I call us Emergent Practitioners.

We artists mutate the forms of collective life by creating experiences that TRANSFORM both our audience and ourselves.

The art of creating such experiences has a name.

It is called TEACHING.

Teaching is not: 

• Guiding students toward a pre-determined outcome
• Managing the attention and behavior of a group
• Telling people what is correct and incorrect

Instead, teaching is:

modelling an art (a living, expressive, emergent practice)

in real time

in front of an audience

that you invite to do the same. –

You do not invite them to copy what you are doing,

but to experiment with the thoughts, techniques, and materials that govern it.

This is why true teaching is inherently transformational, and inherently a form of ART:

because what you are doing is not replicating static knowledge

but creating INTIMACY with materials and practices.

INTIMACY = TRANSFORMATION.

TRANSFORMATION = ART.

Conventional approaches to pedagogy (= the art of teaching) focus on:

Engineering outcomes.

Standardizing results.

Accommodating diverse learning styles.

This is far too outcome-focused to aid in the development of artists.

It doesn’t work for the teacher.

It doesn’t work for the students.

What I teach instead is a “Pedagogy of the Present.”

This is the form of teaching that works for artists (both as teachers and as students)

And provides the basis of world-building art-based businesses that last for the long haul.

I built the Embodied Knowledge Circle because I realized:

In order for Artists under Capitalism to build lasting businesses,

we need to take up our role as agents of collective change.

And in order for us to do that,

we need to remember our first art:

THE ART OF TEACHING.

The EKC is not a certification in my modality.

It is an incubator where you create, develop, & teach yours.

Let’s begin with an axiom:

Just like any three points can be connected to form a triangle,

Your Emergent Business is an ideal entity that already exists in latent form. 

It is latent in your passions, principles, talents, frustrations, experiences, disappointments, & concealed desires.

(Which are in fact collective, not personal)

It is the place where your pleasure, your transformation, and your emergence meet.

Most online business spaces will take one piece of a business & refine it into oblivion

The focus is on technical mastery & teaching you the “best” way to do this that or the other thing.

The Embodied Knowledge Circle, on the other hand, is a place for EMERGENCE.

I took the cutting edge pedagogy I learned & used as a PhD candidate & instructor at UC Berkeley

And the curricular design necessary to locate & create new research 

To create a school specifically designed to isolate your unique role in the collective

(in all its infinite multifaceted expression)

Here's how it works concretely:

The EKC works through the dual powers of IMMERSION & PARTICIPATION.

When you immerse yourself in a new way of thinking and operating -- a new language --

you transform just by listening

you learn much faster

you absorb far more than your consciousness understands.

And when you are presented with TASKS that you must complete within a certain time period,

you USE what you've been learning

you actually INTEGRATE it

you start putting things together in unexpected ways

and CREATING things you'd never have dreamed of.

The EKC combines BOTH to create ambient learning AND active implementation.

Certificate in Embodied Knowledge Practice

Your year in the EKC culminates in the opportunity for certification in Embodied Knowledge Practice.

To do so, you submit a portfolio including your assignments as well as participating in our Experimental Teaching program--

where you teach your own sessions in the Lyceum

attend & workshop those of your peers,

and receive guidance & feedback from me.

This process is *not* about making sure you are a "good teacher."

It is about giving you the embodied experience of the messy process of teaching,

using it as an occasion to generate & develop *your* emergent body of work,

in a community you trust.
